Preserving Chile’s Wine Legacy
Preserving Chile’s Wine Legacy: Help us to safeguard the climate-resilient, original Cabernet Sauvignon clone!
The challenge:
Cabernet Sauvignon, the global icon of red wines, is at a crossroads. Climate change, pests like phylloxera and vineyard diseases are threatening the longevity of vineyards worldwide, from Bordeaux to Napa Valley. Many vineyards now need replanting every 30-40 years, putting strain on wine producers and endangering the future of this noble grape.
The solution:
Chile holds the key to safeguarding the future of Cabernet Sauvignon. Thanks to its natural barriers and geographic isolation, Chile is home to some of the world’s last remaining ungrafted, pre-phylloxera, historic vineyards — pristine, genetically pure vines untouched by the plagues that devastated Europe in the 19th century.
Our mission is to preserve and harness this unique genetic resource. By creating the world’s first Genetic Vine Rescue Centre for endemic Chilean European varieties, we are developing a climate-resilient Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon clone at scale. This innovative approach will serve to protect the grape’s legacy while equipping it to thrive in this ever changing green and blue planet of ours.
What we’re doing from the get-go:
* Mapping ancestral vineyards: We are cataloguing and analysing ancient Cabernet Sauvignon vines in San Rosendo, Chile in direct collaboration with world expert Ian Beecher Jones
* Genetic preservation: Using cutting-edge viticultural techniques, we are aiming to preserve and propagate these pure vines
* Building-in resilience: Our academic research will create a clone resistant to climate challenges, pests, and diseases in partnership with leading universities.
Why it matters:
This project isn’t just about saving a grape — it’s about protecting a strategically significant piece of global heritage and thereby ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy Cabernet Sauvignon’s timeless excellence.
How you can help:
* Collaborating directly with us
* Funding genetic analysis and propagation of pre-phylloxera vines
* Helping establish the Genetic Vine Rescue Centre
* Empowering local vineyard families to sustain their heritage vines
… together we can secure the future of Cabernet Sauvignon and honour the rich winemaking traditions of Chile.
