Croatian Gems at the Henley Royal Regatta
Amidst the capricious weather and exhilarating rowing heats of the Henley Royal Regatta 2024, the bonhomie and exquisite culinary offerings of the enclosures provided the perfect setting for discovering the allure of Piena Sparkling Brut from Croatia. Graciously hosted by the British Croatian Business Club alongside Christopher Burr MW, this year’s festivities were enriched by a thoughtfully curated selection that paired perfectly with the portfolio of Piena.
A Celebration of Winemaking Excellence
Marketed as ‘sparkling happiness, bottled’ the trendsetting Piena range is made using the Martinotti method under the skilful guidance of pioneering winemaker Saša Štula, whose expertise stems originally from Valdobiadenne. Established in 2013, Štula’s modern Dorba Berba DOO winery is nestled in the breathtaking Jastrebarsko Uplands of Croatia, placing a core focus on the blend of quality with innovation.
Now in its fifth vintage, Piena embodies an easy-drinking style derived from four of the region’s indigenous varieties: Štajerska Bjeli, Šcroatiipon, Žuti Plavec and Kraljevina. With bright acidity and crisp apple notes entwined with hints of stone fruit and delicate floral nuances, the fine bubbles tantalise the palate with a refreshingly clean finish.
Equally, standing as a testament to Croatia’s rapidly evolving wine scene, the graceful Piena Rosé Brut showcases a delicate balance of red berry fruits, lifted citrus tones and subtle, floral aromatics accentuated by a super fine, creamy mousse.
Croatian Wine Renaissance
With a winemaking tradition dating back over 2,500 years, Croatia boasts a rich viticultural heritage characterised by indigenous grape varieties and a broad diversity of terroirs. Regions such as Istria, Dalmatia and Slavonia are at the forefront of this revival, with a commitment to excellence that is increasingly garnering international acclaim. Highlighting sustainable practices and authenticity, Croatian winemakers are pioneering a path that resonates with a new generation of wine enthusiasts who crave terroir-driven experiences.
Recent years have witnessed a significant evolution in wine consumption trends, particularly evident in the sparkling wine category. The younger generation is increasingly drawn to unique, artisanal offerings, reflecting a broader movement towards wines that offer more than mere refreshment — they tell a story, evoke a sense of place, and uphold a steadfast commitment to quality.
In the UK especially, consumers are becoming more adventurous, exploring lesser-known varietals and production methods that promise a deeper, more authentic experience. As a result, the demand for more artisanal sparkling wines such as Piena Brut is poised for continued growth, promising to reshape the global wine market.
